Ever wondered why some roads have the occasional blue reflective 'cat's eyes' instead of the usual yellow?

They're actually used by Fire and Rescue and the RFS to signify the location of fire hydrants in adverse weather or smoky conditions. So now you know!

In some good news, we'll be getting more of them rolled out under a couple of handy little grants announced today.

Lake council has secured $100,000 in total from a bushfire recovery fund set up jointly by the State and Federal governments.

Part of it will be used for the cat's eyes, but a significant portion will be used to upgrade the council's Emergency Operations Centre.

Another portion will fund a social media campaign aimed at bringing tourists to the Lake Macquarie area.

Good little wins!
