Premier opens expended football centre at Speers Point

2nd October 2020

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian will today open the expanded Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility with State Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper.

Visiting the region at the invitation of Mr Piper, the Premier also met and thanked some of the many Lake Macquarie people who have volunteered their time for charities and community services throughout the Covid pandemic.

“All of these people and organisations work hard for the community all year but many came under great pressure in recent months as the Covid pandemic and economic crisis worsened,” Mr Piper said.

“I’m grateful that the Premier, who’s been doing a fantastic job herself during this crisis, has taken some time out of her own busy schedule to visit Lake Macquarie and thank those others going the extra mile.”

The Premier also visited the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility at Speers Point to officially open the $3m expansion.

“We were able to get $2.25m in State funds for that second stage of work and it really is a world-class facility now,” Mr Piper said.

“It’s one thing to have a great facility like this to get more young people active, but another to have something that will allow them to train and play at an elite level.

“The quality of the facility is reflected in the fact that it will be used as a home base for one of the teams competing in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

Premier Berejiklian also visited the former Pasminco site at Boolaroo which was acquired by the State Government through special legislation last year.

“The Premier played a vital role in getting Boolaroo moving again after the site became deadlocked in legal disputes,” Mr Piper.

“It was great to show her where Costco will be going and where the residential and employment zones are going.”
