Very happy to announce that we've been able to secure $1.71m in State funding which will allow Lake Macquarie City Council to replace the bridge on Wilton Road at Awaba.
The funding has been secured through the State's Fixing Country Bridges program which is aiming to reduce the maintenance burden of old timber bridges by replacing them with structures that are safer and stronger.
The Wilton Road bridge is currently subject to a 40t load limit and is among several in the district which were last year deemed unsafe under certain conditions.
Among the others is Cooranbong Bridge on Freemans Drive which I know is a huge frustration to people who regularly use it, myself included.
The council was able to secure federal funds for the Cooranbong repairs (which they'll jointly fund). Council officers tell me that design work is well under way and that tenders for the work will likely be called in the next few months.
Some light at the end of the tunnel for those at Cooranbong, and certainly good news for those who travel through Awaba.
