¿¿¿¿The new Police Highway Patrol hub at Morisset is getting the job done. In the first 28 days of operation in the local area, police:
¿¿¿¿ arrested 20 drivers for DUI
¿¿¿¿ arrested 16 drivers with illegal drugs in their system
¿¿¿¿ laid 20 criminal charges
¿¿¿¿ issued 22 charges for serious traffic offences
¿¿¿¿ issued 437 traffic infringement notices.
¿¿¿¿ A lot of people still ask me about getting 24/7 general duties operations at Morisset. We have never given up on that fight and I recently had further meetings with the Premier and senior police to promote our cause. ¿¿¿¿ It's important to remember that governments and politicians don't allocate police numbers - that job's done by the Police Commissioner - but the response I'm getting is positive and I remain hopeful that we'll get the additional police needed to staff a 24/7 station at Morisset down the track.
¿¿¿¿ It's also important to remember that modern policing is different to what it used to be and every police car is effectively a mobile police station.
¿¿¿¿ The officers we have do a very good job in very difficult circumstances, and I thank Superintendent Danny Sullivan for that, along with everyone at Lake Macquarie Police District. Keep up the great work!
