Sorry to report that our 325 days in the Hunter-New England health district without any community transmission of Covid has come to an end.
A man has tested positive at Glen Innes in the far reaches of the health district. This case is not linked to the Sydney-Bondi cluster but a cluster at a mine in the Northern Territory. HNE Health says it poses no risk to us here. It’s also the NT’s first ever cluster of community transmission.
Maybe we’ll hold on to our record by saying it’s been 325 days since the last case of community transmission in the Hunter? Touching wood, of course!

- NEW COVID-19 CASE CONFIRMED -
A new COVID-19 case has been confirmed in the Glen Innes Severn Local Government Area.
The case is a man in his 30s, who was exposed to the virus at the Granites gold mine in the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory. He has remained in isolation since his return home and there is no current risk of infection to the local community. This case is not linked to the Bondi cluster.
This is the first confirmed local case of COVID-19 in the Hunter New England Local Health District since 5 August 2020.
Anyone who has returned from this mine to NSW since 18 June should immediately isolate and call their local public health unit on 1300 066 055.
While there is little risk of infection from this latest case, it’s important that we all remain vigilant and adhere to the restrictions put in place yesterday by the NSW Government.
Anyone who has experienced fever or the recent onset of respiratory symptoms, including a cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, sore throat, or loss of taste and smell, should seek testing immediately and isolate until a negative result is returned.
Our health facilities and a number of private providers continue to operate testing clinics throughout the Northern Tablelands region. A full list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available here.
