¿ COVID UPDATE - Sunday August 1 ¿
¿ Firstly, I wanted to follow up on the vaccination booking debacle which emerged yesterday (see yesterday's posts). I have followed up with the Health Minister, NSW Health and Hunter Health - the latter was in the same dark I was and not aware of the announcement before it happened. Regardless, I've expressed our utmost opposition to existing bookings being cancelled, especially given we were told they wouldn't be. I've expressed particular concern for 1a and 1b workers who had their appointments cancelled, along with frontline workers, people who are immune compromised and other vulnerable people. I was told NSW Health is looking at all cancellations, but I'm still yet to hear back from them.
¿ Like most reasonable people, I don't have a major problem with vaccines being redirected from the future rollout to Sydney where they are obviously needed urgently - to protect them and us - but we were told existing local bookings wouldn't be changed. I'll let you know as soon as I know more.
¿ In today's numbers, there were 239 new cases of community transmission in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. Of those people, 61 had been doing essential work or shopping in the broader Sydney community while unknowingly infectious before their positive test.
¿ There are 222 people now in NSW hospitals with Covid-related illness with 54 people in ICU and 25 on ventilators. Five of those people in ICU had only one vaccine dose, while the remainder had received neither.
¿ It’s now been 360 days without any community transmission in the Lake Macquarie-Newcastle area, so we're certainly hanging in there.
¿ Please remember to use common sense when moving around the place and get tested immediately if you experience any symptoms. Please stay vigilant and stay safe.
