I know the Government and every State MP is extremely busy at the moment, but I just can’t believe that while Dan Murphy’s and Bunnings are open, the State Parliament is closed and not sitting.
I was joined by my independent colleagues Alex Greenwich (Sydney) and Joe McGirr (Wagga Wagga) last week to formally request that Parliament resume for October at the latest. This followed news that the September sittings had been cancelled, with no guarantee that the October sittings would go ahead either.
It’s 2021, and there should be options which allow Parliament to meet including by utilising video conferencing technology. I’ve asked the Premier to not only make sure the October sitting goes ahead, but that the cancelled September weeks are rescheduled for this year as well.
Our political system and indeed our democracy is underpinned by the oversight of the Executive government. I know we’re dealing with extraordinary and very stressful times however representative democracy and accountability of the Government shouldn’t be optional, it is essential!
