The first Teal Sisters Walk at Lake Macquarie has raised more than $5000 for Ovarian Cancer Australia.

The event was organised by Wangi Wangi women Liz Wright who last year was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic ovarian cancer, the deadliest women’s cancer.

About 40 people attended to take part in either the 5km or 10km walk on Sunday, October 21.

“Due to the storm that came across Lake Macquarie on the Saturday night – the evening prior to the walk - and the ongoing forecast for wet weather, I feel put some people off attending the walk,” Ms Wright said.

“It was a little damp to start with, but it turned out to be an excellent temperature to do a walk.”

Ms Wright said she hoped to see a government-funded advertising campaign to educate the public about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

“This would give women of all ages across Australia a better chance of survival . Awareness is key,” she said.

Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, attended the walk and spoke briefly about ovarian cancer awareness, early detection, and research.

Also among the special guests at the walk was Anne Mellon, a clinical nurse from the John Hunter Hospital gynecological unit .

“Anne kindly attended with her family, and gave an up-to-date speech covering statistics and signs and symptoms on ovarian cancer,” Ms Wright said.
