New Wangi jetty to be opened mid-March

THE new public jetty under construction at Wangi Wangi is on track to be completed by March next year.

The old, dilapidated jetty has been demolished, and 74 new steel piles have been driven into the lake bed.

After sleeves are installed around the piles, the piles will be capped with concrete and new concrete headstocks will be put in place.

The old jetty had begun to collapse, and had been closed to the public for two years.

The closure had hit local businesses hard, Wangi RSL Club operations manager Wayne Izzard said.

"The downturn in revenue has been substantial," Mr Izzard said.

State MP Greg Piper helped to get the ball rolling on a replacement jetty last year when he secured state government funding of $670,000 towards the project.

In March, Lake Macquarie City Council said it hoped to have the new jetty completed in time for summer.

But on Monday a spokesperson for the council said the time frame was revised in September.

"The jetty is on track to be completed in early 2020, which was communicated to the local community through signage and newsletter updates in September 2019," the spokesperson said.

"The jetty construction is currently on track for completion in early March 2020."

The new jetty would be a modern steel and fibreglass reinforced plastic deck grating structure with access ramps, lighting and water outlets, they said.

Plans for the structure show that it will be bigger than the jetty it is replacing.

The new structure will be 96.5 metres long, and its main arm will be 43.8 metres long.
