I congratulate Aunty Selena Archibald, Aboriginal Education Officer at Morisset High School, on receiving the prestigious Aboriginal Education Award at the 2025 Newcastle NAIDOC Awards. Aunty Selena is a Gamilaroi woman originally from Moree, who, for the past 25 years has worked tirelessly to promote Aboriginal education and strengthen cultural understanding within Morisset High School and the broader community. Aunty Selena has been central to the creation and growth of the Itji-Marru Aboriginal Resource Centre, whose name in the Awabakal language means "to teach everyone." Through her leadership, Itji-Marru has become a vital cultural and educational hub, offering programs such as the Bush Tucker Garden, Learning Circle, Sista Speak, Bro Speak and the didgeridoo group. In addition to her work at Morisset High School, Aunty Selena received a Lifetime Patron Award at the Western Shores Learning Alliance Deadly Awards in 2023 and continues to lead initiatives like the NRL School to Work program. Her involvement includes supporting student art for the "Boots for Brighter Futures" effort, blending identity, community, and creativity Congratulations Aunty Selena, Lake Macquarie is very lucky to have you.
