I am proud to recognise Chris Gavenlock as the 2026 Local Woman of the Year for Lake Macquarie, an incredible achievement that reflects her tireless commitment to our community. For nearly 30 years, Chris has worked to preserve the history of Morisset Hospital, founding the Morisset Hospital Historical Society, running a small museum, and publishing 'A Private World on a Nameless Bay', which documents the stories of staff, patients and the local community. Her dedication ensures this important history is remembered and celebrated for generations to come. Chris has also used her own experiences following a diagnosis of dystonia to support and advocate for others through the Dystonia Network of Australia, raising awareness and helping those living with the condition. It was a pleasure to join Chris as she received this prestigious award at the NSW Women of the Year Awards. Her work exemplifies leadership, compassion and a deep commitment to making Lake Macquarie a stronger, more connected community. Congratulations, Chris, on this well deserved recognition. Your service, advocacy and dedication are an inspiration to us all.
