SES Cooranbong Unit
The May 2025 floods wreaked havoc in Lake Macquarie, particularly for those living in Dora Creek and Cooranbong.
As bad as it was, this natural disaster would have been immeasurably worse if not for the tireless efforts the SES Cooranbong Unit. Though they themselves were cold, wet and utterly exhausted, the 21 SES volunteers left their own flooded homes and families to help the community. Working day and night, this unit, assisted by 15 members of the public completed 179 jobs between the 16th and 25th of May.
They also provided and filled sandbags, gave regular updates on the evolving situation and offered safety advise to residents. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Unit Commander Madison Lowe, who led six shifts with in-water operator Max Smith.
During this time they completed 10 flood rescues and one priority evacuation across Cooranbong and Dora Creek. 2025 has already been the busiest year for SES Cooranbong Unit since 2015, having completed 431 jobs and we are not even half-way through.
I extend my deepest gratitude and thanks to the unit for all they do to keep our community safe.
