Today I wish to acknowledge the volunteers behind the Heaven Can Wait – Charity Sailing Regatta, who for nearly two decades have filled their sails with the winds of generosity and raised desperately needed funds for their beneficiaries, Cancer Council NSW and Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie. This past year they have exceeded all previous efforts to raise a record breaking $85,000 for the organisations. The 2024 regatta, based at the Toronto Royal Motor Yacht club was a huge success, and saw 63 boats battled it out in the high profile one-lap dash around the lake, 13 continue for the 12 Hour Race and 11 completing the ultimate endurance race in the 24-Hour Challenge. The funds raised through this regatta will provide crucial support to organisations tirelessly working to improve the lives of individuals facing illness, adversity, and hardship. The Heaven Can Wait – Charity Sailing Regatta was conceived by Lake Macquarie yachtsman and cancer survivor Shaun Lewicki to promote sailing and raise funds for men's cancer research. I thank everyone involved in the event, which gets bigger and better every year.
