Today is National Sorry Day and sadly we still have a long way to go to achieve proper reconciliation and repair historical injustices for our indigenous people.
That is one reason why I'm carrying the landmark reforms contained in the Family Is Culture bill in the Legislative Assembly.
The Bill, introduced by David Shoebridge
and successfully passed in the upper house, employs the recommendations made by the Family Is Culture Review back in 2019.
The reforms primarily target the extraordinary number of First Nations children in out-of-home care, often separating them from their culture and country. Did you know that First Nations children are 11 times more likely than non-Aboriginal children to end up in out-of-home care? I feel great shame and alarm when I see those figures, as we all should.
Today we should remember and reflect. Today I again acknowledge and stand with our indigenous people and acknowledge elders past, present and emerging.
