This morning's Lake Macquarie Police District Awards Ceremony was nothing short of inspirational.

There were incredible stories of bravery in crisis, and of our local officers risking their lives to take control of seriously dangerous situations.

It was a pleasure to meet with our top cops, including Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM, who continue to put the safety of our community before themselves.

I would also like to congratulate 10-year-old Ruby and 8-year-old Stella Gordon from Warners Bay who received the District Commander's Certificate of Merit for their bravery and quick thinking when their heavily pregnant mother suffered a medical episode and lost consciousness while behind the wheel. The two girls grabbed the steering wheel and managed to navigate the car to relative safety, before it would have careened into multiple lanes of traffic. No doubt saving lives.

14-year-old Charlie Pugh and Chase Puttergill also received the District Commander's Certificate of Merit, for saving the life of a French tourist who was being swept out to sea at Caves Beach. The boys called Emergency Services and then used lights on their mobile phones to direct the rescue helicopter to where the ailing woman was in the ocean. Police say, they no doubt saved her life.

Congratulations to all award recipients! Thank you for continuing to keep our community safe.
