Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
07th May 2025
Last night there was another Lithium-Ion battery fire in Teralba. I was pleased to hear everyone was safe and the fire successfully managed by local crews. This follows the tragic February 2024 house fire which sadly claimed the lives of two women.
Lithium Ion batteries pose a significant risk when not stored, maintained and charged appropriately. From runaway fires while charging at home to garbage truck fires when batteries are incorrectly disposed of.
It is vital you understand the risks and have appropriate fire safety plans in place to protect your family and property. Fire and Rescue NSW have some important info on their website HERE.
Visit the Lake Macquarie City Council website HERE for info on safe disposal of Lithium Ion Batteries.
NSW Parliament recently passed Australia's first legislation to create a comprehensive whole-of-life stewardship framework to manage these products, from their design and production to their use, re-use, collection, recycling, reprocessing and eventual end-of-life management
