The wheels are finally in motion for the much-needed upgrade of Mandalong Road in Morisset, set to make commutes safer for motorists.

The detailed development design has been priced at $76 million, with both the federal and state governments supplying the funds.

Work is slated for Mandalong Road and Dora Street in Morisset, between Gimberts Road and Ourimbah Street.

It includes the replacement of the existing roundabout with traffic lights at the Mandalong Road-Freemans Drive-Dora Street-Wyee Road intersection, aimed to increase capacity from all entry points.

NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison explained it was an “extremely necessary” move.

“Replacing the roundabout with traffic lights will improve safety and journey reliability for all road-users,” she said.

“Mandalong Road is utilised by thousands of motorists every day.

“So, this upgrade will ensure they can get around the region more quickly and easily, as well as providing better access to Morisset Business Park.”

Two bus stops will also be delivered on Dora Street and a shared user path, which officials said would improve active and public transport access and connectivity.

Global organisation GHD Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to develop the detailed design for the venture, following the approval of the Review of Environmental Factors earlier this year.

Further geotechnical and survey investigations are also included within the plans, as well as the development of detailed engineering drawings and reports, and construction specifications for project delivery.

State government officials stated more than 200 responses were received as part of the consultation period, which will reportedly be taken into consideration as the build progresses.

Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper said he heard the community’s concerns and was determined to “take action”.

“Mandalong Road provides crucial access to residents in the southern Lake Macquarie area,” he explained.

“Frustrated locals have requested urgent action on Mandalong Road for years.

“I’m pleased this government is getting on with the job and giving this project the priority it deserves.

“The upgrade will help to ensure the road network can better cater for the growing population and increased business activity, forecast for the coming decades.”

Transport for NSW said it would continue to engage with key stakeholders through the current phase of the project, which is expected to take about 12-to-18 months.

Construction for the development is anticipated to start in late 2026 but is subject to approvals and release of funding.
