Myuna Colliery needs to stay open

13th February 2026
I have been speaking with Centennial Coal, the Mining & Energy Union, Origin Energy and the NSW Government to try and find a way to keep Myuna Colliery open.
Closing Myuna not only means jobs losses. It would result in significant economic and social shock to the local community.
The energy transition is coming, whether we like it or not.
We need coal mines and power station operators to be proactive and to ready their workers for this change.

The energy transition is coming, whether we like it or not.

We need coal mines and power station operators to be proactive and to ready their workers for this change. We also need the Government to invest in supporting workers and driving new industries to ensure our community can thrive into the future. And we need this NOW.

All parties will need to work together to make this happen, and I’m heartened by the knowledge that Origin Energy and the Mining & Energy Union have had some constructive talks. I also understand Origin Energy and Centennial Coal have had further discussions.

I will also be supporting the Government’s proposed Future Jobs and Investment Authority, which delivers a framework for strategic intervention in coal regions to encourage economic growth and support workers. You can find this Bill, including the amendments I will introduce to increase transparency, accountability and community engagement: HERE

This has been an extremely difficult situation for all involved, but especially the miners who are facing the threat of losing their jobs and an uncertain future. They, along with their families, deserve certainty and support.

I will continue to push for a positive outcome for Myuna staff.
