A hero's welcome to the NSW Parliament
12th February 2026
Yesterday was a very special day in the Parliament of NSW. I had the honour of welcoming a man who has become an international hero and an inspiration to communities in New South Wales and around Australia. Ahmed al‑Ahmed.
The man, who at great risk to his own life, wrested a gun off one of the shooters in the Bondi massacre, undoubtedly saving an untold number of lives.
He received a standing ovation from Members, officers and guests across the Legislative Assembly chamber, in light of the sheer magnitude of our appreciation for his actions on that fateful day.
Joining Ahmed was his brother, Sameh al-Ahmed, who has recently travelled from Russia, and Ahmed's legal adviser, Sam Issa. Ahmed brought with him a great humility and even took the time to meet with my guests, student leaders from Heritage College Lake Macquarie who he offered inspirational life advice. It was wonderful to meet with a true Australian hero .
