The Power of Choice Exhibition

The Power of Choice exhibition opened last night in the Fountain Court at NSW Parliament House.

This incredibly moving, emotional and raw photographic exhibition presented by Go Gentle Australia shares the deeply personal stories of Australians who have accessed voluntary assisted dying.

As co-author of NSW's voluntary assisted dying legislation, it was a privilege to officially open this exhibition and reflect on the years of work by thousands of people that led to this significant reform of end-of-life care in our state.

More than 1,000 people have used this law to end their suffering and die with dignity on their own terms and often surrounded by the comfort of loved ones.

It was also wonderful to be joined by Andrew Denton, whose advocacy through Go Gentle Australia was instrumental in building support for voluntary assisted dying reform, and to meet the man behind the exhibition award-winning photographer Julian Kingma.

I also want to acknowledge my co-sponsor, Alex Greenwich and the many advocates, clinicians, organisations including Dying with Dignity NSW and families who worked tirelessly over many years to help deliver this important health care reform.

This is a truly powerful exhibition, and I encourage anyone visiting Sydney this month to take the time to see it.

Admission is free, and the exhibition is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm until 25 June
