SOUTH Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club, at Sunshine, played host to a record 288 dinghies and almost 400 competitors for the 2017 Trinity Point NSW Youth Championships over the October long weekend.
Competitors as young as 7 competed in 17 fleets of boats and windsurfers at the three-day regatta.
“We were amazed by the number of entries for what we think was the biggest regatta ever held on Lake Macquarie,” Australian Sailing’s regional manager, Declan Brennan, said.
“It was definitely the biggest regatta held so far this year in Australia. With 80 per cent of competitors and their families travelling from outside the local area, the event was a massive economic boost for the local community.”
Some competitors travelled from interstate, while a few even came from New Zealand to race against some of the best junior and youth sailors in NSW, he said.
At the prize giving on the final day of the regatta saw all the winners be presented their medals by sailor Tom Burton, a gold medallist from the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“Tom was a member of South Lake Amateur Sailing Club and completed in the same event as a youth sailor just a few years ago,” Mr Brennan said.
Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper also attended the presentation.
