THE swimming season at Speers Point Swim Centre is about to be extended, and become more comfortable.

A solar photovoltaic and electric heat pump is about to be installed there.

Lake Macquarie City Council has received a helping hand with the project in the form of a grant through the state government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, said the council would receive $181,862 to assist in the installation of a 49.6kW solar system to power a water heating system at the pool.

“The solar heating at Speers Point pool is good because it will extend the swimming season by about six weeks a year,” Mr Piper said.

The heating is also expected to increase patronage during colder periods by keeping the water at a more comfortable temperature.

Last week, the council received an $800,000 boost from the governmnent’s Stronger Country Communities Fund for the repairs and upgrade of Rathmines Community Hall.

Mr Piper said the combined $1 million is state government funding was appreciated.

“I appreciate the state government’s help on these projects, along with the Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, who has assisted in getting the grants approved.”
