For over 50 years Kevin Stokes has used his deep love and knowledge of the environment to champion Australia's unique native flora. He started in 1975 as a member of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (now the Australian Plants Society – APS) and over 20 years held various positions including 2 as President. A passionate advocate for ecosystem preservation, Kevin uses his voice against the continuing destruction of our natural environment. In 1981 Kevin attended a meeting to examine the establishment of a Botanic Garden in the Newcastle region.
After many sites were investigated the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens (HRBG) was established at Heatherbrae in 1986. His enthusiasm and commitment to this project, has never wavered. Kevin's passion for grevilleas has also never waned, with him being actively involved in the APS Grevillea Study group as well as being the curator of the magnificent grevillea garden at HRBG. This year Kevin was awarded the Order of Australia Medal at the 2026 honours for outstanding service to conservation and the environment. I congratulate Kevin and thank him for his commitment to our environment and keeping the love of native flora alive.
