Local Legends

Local heroes

Every community has its quiet achievers. These are the people who volunteer their time, support their neighbours, and make a real difference without seeking recognition. This page is dedicated to celebrating some of these local legends and the outstanding contributions they make to our community.

I'd like to acknowledge the accomplishments of internationally acclaimed artist Tracy Thomas from Fishing Point. Tracy's art adorns walls all over the world. Most notably her art was reproduced on the side of an 11-storey building in Dubai's shopping precinct after she became a recipient of the International Emerging Artist Award.…

I acknowledge one of Lake Macquarie's most tireless volunteers and environmental champions. I recently had the honour of presenting Robyn Charlton with a NSW Government Community Service Award to acknowledge the many years she has spent working on countless environmental and community projects.…

I'd like to recognise the amazing efforts of Leonie Cutts and Craig Browne from Martinsville who have quite literally brought the spirit of Christmas to those in need for more than 20 years.…

I'd like to congratulate Kirralee Kelly, Kellie Williams and their daughter Bae-Phoenix Kelly on being selected to play for their respective Australian Indigenous teams in the upcoming OzTag World Cup in Ireland later this year.…

After many years of dedicated community work, the current executive of Bonnells Bay Progress Association will soon retire. While regrettable, it is understandable as each of them has given more than requested and more than expected.…

I'd like to acknowledge the passing of Horace 'Taffy' Davies from Bonnells Bay who was just months away from his 100th birthday. Taffy was a truly wonderful man who had a fascinating life. Taffy was a spirited character who was born in Wales in 1921, served with the British Navy in WWII and migrated to Australia in 1959.…

I want to commend and acknowledge the heroic actions of Hayden Perks from Morisset Park after he saved a family of nine from drowning on Boxing Day 2021. I'd like to congratulate Francis Kitcher from Speers Point on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday 2022 Honours List. Frank, as he is more commonly known to friends and family, was recognised for his services to rugby league and tennis.…

Christmas is a time of giving, and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of one young lady who is going above and beyond to make sure everybody in Lake Macquarie can have a joyous Christmas day.…

I acknowledge a wonderful organisation that has not only served the children of my electorate for more than 50 years but also encapsulates the true meaning of community spirit. The Peter Pan Preschool at Wangi Wangi School has operated as a community-based centre for 52 years.…
