Lake Macquarie is a region with a rich legacy of coal mining. As our thermal coal needs decline with the introduction of more renewable energy, we will see not only the closure of Origin Eraring Power Station but also mines throughout the area as they reach end of life. But, the reduced need for coal in the future does not mean jobs have to be impacted.
One of the ways we can plan for our region’s future is to investigate adaptive, innovative post mining land uses.
Traditionally, when a mine closes, there is a commitment to remediate the site and return the natural environment. While this approach is appropriate for some mining sites, there are opportunities to utilise these former mines and use their robust infrastructure to create employable land.
The former Rhondda Road Colliery site at Wakefield became a pilot project with private investment transforming the mine into a luxury tourism venture, Black Rock Motor Resort. This is a fantastic project, maximising the site’s capabilities to deliver a new use for the region.
The former Glencore Macquarie Coal Complex site at Teralba is identified for post mining land use with a draft masterplan presented for public exhibition and feedback during July/August 2026. You can read more about the Macquarie Coal Complex Transformation Precinct HERE.
This site presents an unmatched opportunity to use the land, and its existing infrastructure, to service new industries and employment. In particular, the ability to utilise the site’s dedicated rail loop to establish a train manufacturing hub in Lake Macquarie, following Premier Chris Minns’ 2026 announcement of the Government’s intention to return the industry back to the Hunter.
As mines gradually close throughout the region we should be investigating any opportunities available, and planning to make the most out of them, to secure future employment and growth for our communities.
