Local Legends

Local heroes

Every community has its quiet achievers. These are the people who volunteer their time, support their neighbours, and make a real difference without seeking recognition. This page is dedicated to celebrating some of these local legends and the outstanding contributions they make to our community.

I'd like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of Maureen Turner from Toronto. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Maureen through U3A, but I didn't learn until recently about the decades she has spent helping those who truly need it, not just at home but across the globe.…

I'd like to acknowledge Peter Bateup of Wyee following his retirement from Central Coast District Rural Fire Service.…

I'd like to acknowledge the many wonderful people associated with efforts to establish the new Wyee Community Hub at Wyee. Once complete, this volunteer-run function centre will offer a range of services and initiatives aimed at helping anyone who is disadvantaged or homeless.…

I'd like to acknowledge the passing of a true gentleman and one of the founding members of South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club, Peter Jacobson, who was affectionately known as Alfie. Alfie was a big character known for his humour and wonderful story-telling, and could often be found holding court on the club's veranda on sailing days.…

I'd like to acknowledge and thank the most wonderful team of volunteers behind a truly remarkable venture operating in Morisset. Run by Paul Rankin and staffed by more than 100 volunteers, the ADRA Op Shop first opened its doors to the community in August 2020.…

I'd like to acknowledge the young entrepreneurial efforts of Miah Edwards from Boolaroo. At the age of just 11, Miah has found her passion in designing and creating homemade resin jewellery and has developed that passion into a burgeoning business.…

Known among his family and friends as a "super sniffer", nine-year-old Griffin Smith from Boolaroo has put his naturally good sense of smell to excellent use and created his very own micro-business called 'Griffy's Whiffys'. Griffy's Whiffys comprises a range of hand-crafted essential oils which are mixed together to create unique, pleasant-smelling scents and sold in a colourful spray bottle.…

I'd like to acknowledge and congratulate Cr Wendy Harrison on her retirement as a councillor from Lake Macquarie City Council after 17 years of service. Wendy was first elected in 2004 as an Independent under the umbrella of a group of independents who ran as an alliance. She was truly independent and worked with great integrity, care and work ethic.…
